Hiking and Biking
There are over 200 miles of hiking and biking trails throughout the state forests and parks in Walton County. There are trails through pine forests and preserved land areas, stunning bald cypress swamps, over mountainous sand dunes and by coastal dune lakes. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of one of the nation’s most endangered bird species or one of the 14 unique plant communities.
One of the most beloved and widely used paved paths is the Timpoochee Trail. It is named after the influential Native American Chief of the Euchee Indian tribe, Timpoochee Kinnard. It runs the full length of County Road 30A and winds through beach communities, along lakes and through natural scenery with gulf views.

Water Fun
There is water all around 30A – who can resist the allure of water activities? One of the most popular activities in the area is stand up paddle boarding. Paddle boarding – also called YOLO (You Only Live Once) Boarding is great exercise and a lot of fun. Jet skis and parasailing are favorite pastimes in the area. And for those seeking a quieter recreation, try kayaking across a dune lake.
Fishing and boating are time-revered favorite pastimes in the area. Professional and amateur fish-seekers seek South Walton’s sugar-white shores because they offer some of the best sport fishing in the world. Grouper, cobia, red snapper, king mackerel, flounder, crevalle jack, amberjack, trigger fish, Spanish mackerel, blackfin, tuna, mahi mahi and other fresh fish are well-known catches in the area. There are local charters, guide boats or rent-your-own boats for tons of fun in the sun!
Rest and Relaxation
What would a beach vacation be without lazy days on the sand? If you’re looking for a relaxing way to decompress, a day at the beach is just the ticket. Enjoy kite boarding, surfing, shell collecting, sand-sculpting or just sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds on the beautiful white sandy beaches in the area.
Bring a chair that can get wet and sandy, a beach bag with tanning oil and sunscreen so you don’t end up with a nasty sunburn. Don’t forget a large towel, your phone or iPod with your favorite music and a good book to get lost in. Grab a Frisbee, volleyball or cornhole bags if you enjoy games, some cold drinks and you’re off to enjoy a day next to the water!
Once you’re there, go for a long walk. Enjoy the feel of the warm sand between your toes and the water washing over your feet.
